Here are a few of the latest news on how Exercising can reduce or eliminate many problems we see in dealing with disease and weight problems. It seems like there is something that comes out every week declaring how much better we will feel and look when we exercise regularly.

Folks genetically predisposed to obesity can reduce their odds of piling on the pounds by staying physically active, a new study suggests.

(“It’s good to see that physical activity can really help people despite having the (obesity) gene,” Berkowitz said.

A large international group of researchers found that the so-called “fat mass and obesity associated” (FTO) gene, which is known to increase the risk of obesity, has a 27 percent weaker effect on physically active adults compared to inactive ones. Their conclusion comes from a meta-analysis of 45 prior studies analyzing data from more than 218,000 participants.

“I think it is important to highlight that you don’t have to run a marathon or necessarily join the gym, but walking the dog, cycling to work, taking the stairs . . . about one hour (of activity) a day, five days a week, will have the effect we saw in our study,” said study author Ruth Loos, group leader of the Genetic Aetiology of Obesity Programme at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, England. “We hope that studies like ours convince people that even when genetically susceptible, a healthy lifestyle will help in the prevention of weight gain.” Source: USAtoday

Sometimes I think the best way to get through to people is to constantly be citing the benefits and proclaiming what you can expect from following a good exercise program. What it does for your health and daily comfort. Please read on…

“We do not yet know for sure what the causal relationship between physical activity and depression is like. What is clear is that elderly people who are physically active are less depressed, but higher levels of depression can also lead to less exercise, and this suggests there is a mutual influence,” said Dr. Magnus Lindwall, associate professor in exercise and health psychology at the University of Gothenburg.

Lindwall and his research colleagues studied 17,500 elderly people with an average age of 64 from 11 European countries. The subjects in the study were followed for over two and a half years, with regard to physical activity and depression.

“This study is one of the first to look at both how physical activity affects future depression and vice-versa, and how change in physical activity is associated with change in depression over time,” says Lindwall. Source: psychecentral.com

This is important because I think that a majority of elderly people may not have family and have to deal with feeling of loneliness which can often lead to or accelerate the feelings of depression. If you have an elderly person in your family – spend some time with them…especially if they live alone. Call them and see how there feeling – ask if they need anything.

Here is another related news research that claims we can reduce the effect of fat mutated genes by doing regular exercise.

We all know that fat is transferred to generations through muted genes but it doesn’t mean that we should give up the hope of getting a slim physic. Weight loss programs like dieting fall flat in front of our mutated genes but exercise can do wonders.

In the past, researchers have pointed out that genes make it difficult for us to control the urge for food. But if one continues to work out then one can definitely get rid of those unwanted fat around out belly and thighs.

It has been informed that people suffering from genetic related problems often have FTO gene which encourages them to consume extra 100 calories per meal. In a study, the Medical Research Council’s researchers observed the effect of exercise on the people with FTO gene.

The researchers found that regular exercise proves beneficial for a person. It has been revealed that mutated genes causes 33% rise in the weight. But if one exercise then the mutated genes can cause only 22% of obesity, which means extra fat which could push a person towards deadly diseases can be prevented.

According to the researchers, about 49% of Britons is affected with FTO genes. There are as many as 32 genes which in human which have been blamed for causing obesity. Obesity has become one of the biggest issues for many countries.

The people are being advised to exercise regularly so that the affect of mutated genes could be reduced. Escaping from the clutches of obesity is not an easy task but if one works smartly then it could be prevented. Regular exercise not only keeps us fit but also prevents us from falling ill.

Cambridge University medical researcher Ruth Loos noted, “People who carry the gene but who are physically active have a reduced risk compared to people who carry the gene but are inactive”. Source: Topnew.us

The benefits of following a regular exercise program are enormous. Our main concern is developing the habit of exercising. One effective way to get your daily exercise in is to make it a priority every day. Before you do chores, go shopping, or work out in the yard. Making it a priority gives us a greater chance of successfully getting it done day after day.

Check out this nice little article from Jill Duffy over at pcmag.com

I’m always amazed at what technology has been able to do especially in the field of exercise and fitness. This is a nice clean simple looking little band or bracelet but apparently it pack a big technology punch.

Jawbone, a company best known for making fashionable Bluetooth earpieces, announced today that it will sell an all-in-one smart fitness gadget that aims to help people totally improve their personal health and fitness.

The $99 device, called Jawbone UP, is a simple-looking wristband capable of collecting data about a person’s activity throughout the day as well as sleep patterns at night.

Now, that is an extremely reasonable price for something that is can do what they say it can. I’ll have to follow the reviews and keep you up to date on how well it works and what people are saying about it.

Paired with Jawbone apps on Apple mobile devices, such as iPhones and iPads, Jawbone UP also collects and analyzes the data to help you make better sense of your habits and lifestyles, identifying, for example, the effects of exercise on your ability to sleep deeply. While there are some existing personal health and fitness devices that already track and analyze activity and sleep—one example is Fitbit Ultra ($99.95)—Jawbone UP adds intelligent feedback. It can remind you to move more during the day if it notices long periods of motionlessness, or gently vibrate to wake you at the optimal point in your sleep cycle.

OK, I hope this thing doesn’t wake me in the middle of a great nights sleep. It sound like this part might be a little tricky to get right. Maybe they have a way to set it so you don’t have to deal with this function.

Another feature of the Jawbone UP that sets it apart from other smart pedometers and fitness-tracking devices, is it adds a photo journal feature to track what you eat. Other fitness apps that do incorporate diet usually do so by having users manually enter the foods they eat, line by line and ounce by ounce, while estimating the total nutritional and caloric intake. Taking advantage of the cameras built into iPhones and some other iOS devices and encouraging users to actually photograph their food could help the average person better understand what they consume.

Jawbone is releasing the UP in three sizes and seven colors: black, brown, dark red, bright red, white, silver, and bright blue. The device is scheduled to go on sale November 6.

If anybody buys this we would love to hear your feedback in the comment sections here. Please bookmark this page and return with your experience using the Jawbone UP. We would love to hear it!

Cardinal Fitness abruptly closed six of its Indianapolis locations Tuesday and Wednesday. This article compliment of the Indystar.com.

This has set off a scramble of marketing for other local gyms and clubs to lure the members to there clubs. Marketing to already interested and paying members is always easier than weeding through new clients.

“We just couldn’t get membership where we needed. Those six locations were struggling, and they were taking down the other six. We had to make some hard decisions,” said Maribeth St. Pierre, project manager for Black Diamond, Wash., businessman John Bahlenhorst, who owns the six remaining Cardinal Fitness facilities in Indianapolis, two others in Indiana and five in Wisconsin.

The LA Fitness chain bought the memberships of the closed Cardinal Fitness facilities for a price that barely covered the final payroll at the six closed clubs, St. Pierre said.

The slowing and sluggish economy is certainly being felt everywhere even in the fitness industry which usually does very well even in down turns in the economy.

But other health clubs quickly began angling to sign on the former Cardinal Fitness members by offering special deals.

Westview Healthplex Sports Club offered to waive its enrollment fee and give a month’s free use of its club. The JCC Indianapolis on the Northside and Family Fun & Fitness on the Far Eastside dangled similar incentives.

“We are doing a lot of social media promotion” on Facebook and Twitter, said Devon Brown, manager at Family Fun & Fitness, which had already signed up several Cardinal Fitness members by Wednesday afternoon.

A winnowing out of health clubs was expected in a market that has seen the number of fitness facilities more than triple in the past 13 years, to the current number of slightly more than 100, said Kent Allison, director of membership services at Westview Healthplex, which opened 13 years ago.

It’s surprising to see health clubs, fitness centers close considering they already get paying members even if the members no longer come. This is due to them making you sign contracts for periods of at least a year. Maybe this is a sound off to fitness clubs…Quit making members sign contracts and charging them even when they are not using the services.
