Snoring Solutions to Help Avoid Snoring Surgery

by GuestPoster on August 11, 2010

Snoring is something we often joke or tease about, but it can be a serious disorder; it can cause permanent damage to your throat and lead to insomnia.  Snoring surgery is usually done as a last resort because it may not always be successful in curing the snoring, and, of course, there are risks in any surgical procedure.  The following are a few things you may want to try before taking such a drastic step as surgery.

Smoking is a dangerously unhealthy habit, not only does smoking contribute to snoring it can cause many other, far more serious health problems.  I realize quitting is easier said than done for most people, but if curing your snoring is the reason you quit, great!

Drinking alcohol before bedtime can dry out the throat and make you more likely to snore.  It is best for snorers to limit or eliminate alcohol intake several hours before bedtime.

Marjoram oil may help keep sinuses open; by having an open jar of this on the nightstand by the bed the aromatherapy benefits may be enough to alleviate snoring by opening nasal air passages.

If you try these solutions for a reasonable amount of time and they do not seem to be working, it may be time to discuss surgical intervention for your snoring.  The surgery performed for snoring is a laser procedure that is relatively painless and quick.  Since the surgery involves both the mouth and throat it may be performed by either a doctor or dentist.  The first step in the surgery is to evaluate the area and determine exactly what is causing the blockage; then lasers are used to remove all or part of the blockage.  The tissue most commonly removed is the tonsils, which are unnecessary anyway, but the physician may also remove part of the adenoids, pharynx or other tissue blocking the airway.

As mentioned before, snoring surgery is rare and used as a last resort.  However, if no other solutions have worked for you surgery may be the best option for you.  You physician will be the one who will know  if surgery is right for you and what procedure will most benefit you.
